Description |
English: This image, first appearing in the magazine Once a Week on February 8, 1862, served as an illustration to the poem "The Old Chartist" written by George Meredith. The poem, a long-winded sermon on the injustices dealt to the working man, is neatly summarized by Sandys. A single figure in the left foreground, clothed in working man’s garb, is depicted deep in thought. The remaining expanse of the composition is entirely devoted to the detailed landscape in which he stands. (see references) |
