Summary edit

Description
English: The Old Grey Hound, 46 Genesee Street, Cuba, New York, November 2021. An example of the vernacular Greek Revival architecture that was common in the United States in the early to mid-19th century, this two-story brick structure is capped off by a shallow-pitched hipped roof that's matched by the one sheltering the full-width Doric portico that extends across the six-bay-wide façade. The jack arches and simple stone sills that adorn the windows exemplify the post-and-lintel motif that separates Greek Revivalism from the contemporaneously popular Late Federal aesthetic. Despite the replica ghost sign plastered across its façade, there's no evidence that the building ever housed a grocery store. Its true history is fairly murky: most accounts affirm that it was originally a hardware store, and connect it to the commercial mini-empire of Robert Smith (1828-1857), who was briefly one of the most prominent citizens in Cuba before his untimely death at the age of only 29. In addition to the store, Smith operated a sawmill, served as an officer in the Cuba Bank, and was one of the village's first trustees at the time of its incorporation in 1850. The website of the building's most recent owner - The Old Grey Hound, a pub-style restaurant that opened in 2018 and has been closed since 2021 due to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic - indicate that it was constructed in 1856, but state census records indicate that it's likely a bit older than that, probably dating from the early 1850s.
