| Description |
English: The Oxnam Water Viewed from the east bank by an arable field. The west bank is a red sandstone cliff. There are caves marked on the O.S. map to the north of this point in the adjoining square, but they are difficult to make out through vegetation and appear to be inaccessible.
In 1860, a group of eight to ten caves were discovered cut into the sandstone cliff. Several contained socket holes for timber beams, whilst in the remaining caves there was evidence that the walls supported beds and shelves. One of the caves is believed to have been a stable, but it is unclear whether these caves were rock dwellings or hiding places. Today all but one of the caves has been destroyed by erosion. |
