For a moment the instrument was silent, andthen the hammer of the magnet tapped the bell,one, two, thi-ee, the signal. Another pause of afew seconds, and the lightning came ffashingeastward, 2,400 miles to Washington; and theblows of the hammer on the spike were repeatedinstantly in telegraphic accents upon the bell ofthe Capitol.
