Summary edit
DescriptionThe Queen's Bridge, Belfast (2) - geograph.org.uk - 1186123.jpg |
English: The Queen's Bridge, Belfast (2) 488798 showed the southern side of the bridge. This is the northern side. Lanyon's original bridge (1840/43) comprised the stone arches. Bretland's widening of 1885/86 added the cantilevered overlay supported by intricately adorned columns. With apologies to any of his descendants who might read this, he ruined the appearance of a classic Victorian urban bridge. On the other hand it's still in use 123 years later so his engineering skills are not in doubt. |
