The old Roman tower of Drusus,said to be the tomb of Drusus, deserves to bevisited on account of the fine view it commandsfrom the top. Outside the fortifications are some publicgardens, from which a beautiful view of thetown and the surrounding country is obtained.The military Austrian and Prussian bands playhere. They also play every day on paradeduring the summer months. The gates of the town are shut at 10 oclock,and are only opened to those who travel byeilwayen or extra-post. Wiesbaden is eight miles distant from May-ence ; a railroad is now in full operation. Railway to Frankfurt in one hour and ahalf: —to Wiesbaden in a quarter of an hour. EXCURSIONS FROM MAYENCE. Miles. Fare Is. to Wiesbaden (Railway) - 6Fare 3s. 6d. to Frankfurt ditto - -22to Mannheim - 46; The best route to Heidelburg is by steam-boatto Mannheim, and thence by railway. MANNHEIM. De lEurope.Pfalzer.Rheinischer.Russischer. Mannheim is a large and handsome town inthe territory of the grand duchy of Baden ; it issituated on the left bank of the Rhine. For-merly it was a strong fortress, and in consequence has been exposed to various sieges: twice ithas been burnt to ashes by the French andAustrians. The chief point of attraction at Mannheimis the society formed by the amiable GrandDuchess and her Court. Many English havetaken up their residence here chiefly on thataccount. The Palace is a large red structure ;a part of it is occupied by the Grand Duchess ;one wing is appropriated for the Museum, and 174 THE RHINE EOOK. another, which contained the Theatre, wasburnt by the Austrians, and is still in ruins.The gardens of the Palace overlook the Rhine,and form a delightful promenade. In the environs are some private gardenssituated on the banks of the river Neckar,which add much to the beauty of Mannheim. The Theatre is good, and its orchestra is notto be
