Took this photo on a funeral some days ago. A very old church.... Bjorn, @heidenstrom on Twitter Ringsaker church Ringsaker church was constructed before 1150, possibly by the crusader Sigurd Jorsalfar, son of Magnus the Barefoot and dedicated to St. Olav. The first church was probably of wood. The later stone basilica was most likely erected in the middle of the 12th century, and it is one of Norway's oldest and most beautiful sacred buildings.The church is constructed in a special manner, with a very dominating tower above the nave. Some scientists claim that the cathedral in Hamar was the model, others say that the style was omported from abroad. During the reign of king Håkon Håkonsson (d. 1263) The church was enlarged and got its present look. It is mentioned in writing for the first time during the fight between earl Skule and the followers of Håkon Håkonsson around the year 1240. Pilgrims on their way to Nidaros stopped here, both because the church was specially dedicated to St. Olav, and because the vicarage was a guest house. Through many years the church has been open in summer. In 2002 as many as 306 churches in Norway were open during summer. 67 of these are so called road churches, and Ringsaker is one of these. The road church is a sort of seamen's church along the road, a different stop with rest for body and soul. The supreme treasure of the church is the Triptycon from the 16th century (see separate page), but both the magnificent font and the pulpit from 1707 are worth a closer look. Formerly there was also a christening house, which can now be seen at Norsk Folkemuseum in Oslo. |
