Notes: This municipal scrip was issued in Sabine by The Sabina City Company. Laid out in 1836 by Sam Houston and Philip A. Sublett, the city was first called City of Sabine. The name was changed to Sabine Pass in 1860. The left and right borders of the note are ornately decorated. The word REPUBLIC is printed at the bottom of the left border, and the words OF TEXAS. are printed in the lower right border. The number 100 is printed in the center of the left and right borders and is surrounded by decorative designs. The abbreviation No. is printed in the upper center of the note; the number 1079 is handwritten adjacent to it. Beneath is a vignette of an American Indian who is seated and overlooking a town or city with a star and rays overhead. The phrase THE SABINA CITY COMPANY is printed across the face of the note. The month, day, and last two digits of the year are handwritten on the note; the first two digits of the year, 18, are printed. It is signed on the recto by the secretary and president, both of whose signatures are illegible.
