Then came the panic of 73when the town vanished, and, havingwritten dead or removed oppositeto the name of every soul connected inany way with the congregation of St.Clements parish, Mr. Tays yielded topersuasion and took his boys to Illinoisthat they might enter school. In 1881 the railroad came to El Pasoand Mr. Tays was among the first ofthose who came to lay the foundationsof the present splendid city. The landshe had been obliged to receive years be-fore in lieu of fees were now valuable,so that he found himself a man of inde-pendent means. He immediatelyprofited by this, and in the heart of thetown built the church and rectory. Theparish still has the bell he had cast inMexico and the people seem to regardthis relic with peculiar reverence.
