Text Appearing Before Image:
ement arc at the down-town terminals of the busy lines, which are not providedwith loops, and at the intersections of busy north and southwith east and west lines. South Ferry is the terminal ofthe Eighth Avenue, Sixth Avenue and Broadway lines, and it is here that the greatest terminal congestion occurs. Table XI. gives the busiest Manhattan surface in-tersections. The maximum number of cars passing a givenintersection in one hour is at Sixth Avenue, Broadway andThirtv-Fourth Street, vvith 1070 cars. The intersection ofFourth Avenue and Twenty-Third Street, while there arefewer cars, is more troublesome, however, because thenumber of cars is more evenly divided between the northand south and east and west lines. The Columbus Circlecrossing at Eighth Avenue and Fifty-Ninth Street, andthat at Twenty-Third Street and Broadway are also busypoints. It is really the capacity for passing carsat these intersecting points which principally de-termines the capacity of the north and south lines.
