V^sheet StG«l 388 STREET RAILWAY JOURNAL. (Vol. XXIX. No. 9. The principal work of the first of the two locomotivesconsists in shifting cars in and out of the northern divisionof the Sulhvan Square shops for the purpose of wheel grind-ing or truck changing. About forty-eight pairs of wheelsare ground daily, and the locomotive is constantly at worktransferring cars to and from the special track in the shopswhich is served by an elevator connecting with the machineshop on the ground floor. Ever since electric train opera-tion began in Boston it has been necessary to shift dead carsby a passenger car withdrawn from service. On this car thefacilities for looking back at the rear of the train were notgood, and safe movements could not be made without con-siderable delay in signaling. In the case of the locomotivethe driver can readily see all that is happening at the end ofthe train, and the control is graduated so that the loco-motive can be moved an inch at a time if desired.
