The South Company, founded through the efforts of Usse-linx for the purpose of making settlements in the New Worldand conducting extensive commercial enterprises, was turnedaway from Its original purpose and failed, and the other pro-jects that occupied his energies for years had even less success.As time went on, however, the Idea of Usselinx assumed shapethrough a different channel and finally materialized, but on asmaller scale. It was the commercial ambition of Swedish statesmen andtheir endeavors to interest Dutch merchants In the copper tradethat led to the founding of New Sweden. Copper mining wasone of the most Important industries in Sweden during the firsthalf of the seventeenth century and the copper trade was ofgreat significance and a source of large income to the Swedishgovernment.
