Description |
The Thames as a gateway to foreign trade routes. Etching by J. Barry, 1791. Folklore-pagan god, Father Thames, sits on an open chariot, centre, accompanied by nereids in the water. In-water holding this are Captain Cook in front of Sir Francis Drake and Sir Walter Raleigh, and to right is a man identified in the British Museum catalogue (and elsewhere) as Dr. Charles Burney, the scholar and composer of music. The latter three are clothed. Left, figures representing Europe, Africa, America and Asia. Flying above a dove under his arms is Hermes or Mercury holding caduceus and Roman tuba (simple clarion or trumpet). Iconographic Collections |
