English: The Village Hall, Cholesbury, Buckinghamshire Cholesbury is a village situated in a picturesque area of the Chiltern Hills, about 4 miles (6.4 km) east of Wendover. Together with the villages of St Leonards, Buckland Common and Hawridge, if forms the parish of Cholesbury-cum-St Leonard's. The parish has no shop or post office, but it does have four pubs and three churches.
The delightful little Cholesbury Village Hall, a detail of which is shown here, dates from 1895. It was built on land donated by Frederick Butcher, a Baptist and a partner of Butcher's Banker in Tring (now a constituent of Natwest), who was a staunch supporter of the Temperance movement and saw the importance of providing recreational facilities for working men as an alternative to the alehouse. Originally a "parish room" it was managed by the 'Men's Club', which charged one penny a week membership and did its best to exclude rowdies from the neighbouring villages. |
