64 FROM COLONY TO COMMONWEALTH. trouble was spared to celebrate the birth of the new nation.No visitor to Sydney who kept his eyes open as the processionwended its way from the Domain to the Centennial Park, canhave escaped seeing these evidences of Greater Sydneyswelcome to the Commonwealth. Slowly the great procession wended its way through thethronged streets, cheer after cheer arising as this or thatpopular person or body was presented to the public view.But the climax of the great interest was reached when LordHopetoun was sworn-in as first Governor-General of thenewest-born of nations. A slight and interesting figure hepresented as he came forward from his place in the pavilionin Centennial Park and received the applause of the thousandswho there represented Australia. The official preliminariestook somewhat long a-doing. After the Primate of Australiaand Tasmania had recited the prayers set down for the occa-sion, there was the reading of various official documents byMr. E. G.
