Summary edit

Description
English: The Whin Sill I have looked at this picture in so many geography books and thought that I must go there sometime. It did not disappoint. Whin and whinstone are quarrymen's terms for any dark coloured rock, such as basalt or dolerite, which used to be used as road metal. The Whin Sill outcrops in the north of Northumberland, at Bamburgh, the Farne Islands and Dunstanburgh Castle. Inland, the Romans carried their amazing wall along the crest of the Whin Sill. The thickness of the Sill varies from a couple of feet to several hundred feet. The strata directly above and below are thermally metamorphosed.
