Summary edit

Description
English: The White Tree. This is White Tree Roundabout, a local landmark, painted once a year. (When I first came to Bristol it wasn't painted annually and I didn't understand why it was called White Tree Roundabout). This is at least the 3rd tree to have been painted white at this point, the first was removed when the roundabout was built, and the 2nd died in the 1970's of Dutch Elm disease. The tradition started in the middle of the 19th century, and has several theories as to why it began including one that it was to guide a local man home after he had visited the pubs in Clifton.
