The building predates the expo; it was built in 1910 as Dallas's first coliseum, originally designed for horse shows and to hold livestock but also usedfor operas and other musical entertainment. "The Spirit of the Centennial" 15-foot-high statue outside depicts a young woman rising from a saguaro cactus (a species native to Arizona, not Texas). A Texas girl, Georgia Carroll, was the model.
