Text Appearing Before Image:
he notice of the breeding public. Nomatter how fine your specimens, nearly all of them may behelped up to an extra point of merit if care is taken to putthem in the best possible condition in flesh, to cleanse thecomb and face by washing in alcohol and water, and the The Wyandotte Fowl. 31 shanks in soapsuds, brushing all dirt and filth out fromunder the edge of the scales. You know that pullets moulttwice before they lay. Now, if they have been raised in aclose pen, with insufficient grass and meat in their diet, theywill not moult clean the second time, and if you will picka pullet up and examine her you will see that while shelooked fine at a few rods distance, she has many rusty oldfeathers in her back; these should be removed six weeksbefore show time, or a cut of one point she will surely sufferat the hands of the judge. This care, with pains to furnisha generous diet of meat, corn and a few oats for the threeweeks previous to exhibiting, will secure you success in theshow room.
Text Appearing After Image:
General Care of Poultry, housing. We must, before cold weather puts in an appearance, make suitable quarters for our fowls. It will not do to letthem rough it all day long about manure heaps or arounddilapidated sheds when the snow is upon the ground if wewant them to lay and come out in good condition for breed-ing the coming spring. There is no need of putting up costly and elaboratebuildings for fowls. It is very well for those who can affordit, and who like to have everything about their premiseslooking handsome and attractive; but for the novice whocarries a slender purse, a plain and comfortable hennerywill do as well. The best site for a poultry house is an elevated one, butwhere that is not at hand, the ground should be ploughed orspaded, and the earth thrown towards the centre. Whenthe frame is up, the floor should be raised to the top of theunderpinning with gravelly loam and sand, and frequentlyrenewed during the year. The roosts should be low for Wyandottes or other large-s
