English: The aborted attempt to build a road link from Rhiw Bach Quarry This photo, taken from the exit incline, is of the 'Old' Rhiwbach Quarry. This was largely an open quarry, though in the 1860s some underground work, accessed by means of vertical shafts, took place. In the 1930s, the management had the idea of replacing the Rhiwbach Tramway and the expensive Ffestiniog Railway as a means of moving slate with a road linked to a new road recently built by Bwlch y Slaters (Manod) Quarry to reach the GWR station at Llan Ffestiniog. (Manod had fallen out with Rhiwbach over way leave charges on the Rhiwbach Tramroad) However, the plan was aborted leaving behind a section of a road to nowhere and a partly infilled quarry working. |
