| Description | Alongside the main street, opposite the “Monument of the Shields”, excavation has revealed a bathhouse from the Imperial age. Two thresholds led down from the covered walkway into an antechamber. The large entrance hall in the west end of the building led southwards into another, smaller, reception room, with two columns, a mosaic floor and marble cladding. On the north side of the bathhouse were the frigidarium with a large pool and a latrine. To the east of the main reception hall were three chambers, for warm and hot baths. The hypocaust with its brick arches and pillars can still be seen beneath the floor of the heated rooms. The furnaces (praefurnia) were located behind the bathhouse, on the east side. |
