TYRE. 657 worked on the new pier with surprising en-ergy, and at length, after many delays, not-withstanding the prodigious efforts of theTyrians to destroy and retard their work,the mole was finished. It was much broaderthan the others, and was more firm andcompact in its structure. The Macedoniansplanted military engines of all kinds on thecauseway, in order to batter and shake thewalls of the city, and to hurl on the besiegedarrows, stones and burning torches. At thesame time Alexander ordered the command-ers to surround the city with their ships.The Tyrians, on their side, also made prepa-rations for a vigorous defense.
