English: The belfry at Melrose Abbey. On the apex of the south transept gable 781605. Cracks were recently discovered on the bell and it has been removed for repair. An information plaque at the foot of the south transept reads as follows:-
THE ABBEY BELL, CAST IN 1608 IN MIDDFLBURG, HOLLAND BY JAN BURGERHUYS, SUMMONED WORSHIPPERS TO THE PARISH KIRK OF MELROSE IN THE ABBEY UNTIL A NEW CHURCH WAS BUILT IN 1810 ON THE WEIRHILL. FOLLOWING THE MELROSE ABBEY 850TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONS IN 1986, THE BELL WAS REFURBISHED AND ELECTRIFIED. IT RINGS EVERY SUNDAY AT 9AM AND 10AM AND ON SPECIAL LOCAL OCCASIONS. |
