Distr.: Western United States, from the Great Plains to the Pacificcoast and from British Columbia to Lower California; breeds fromthe mountains of Arizona and New Mexico northward; accidentalin Illinois. 7o6 Field Museum of Natural History — Zoology, Vol. IX. Special characters: General plumage, uniform brownish gray,paler on throat; a distinct white ring around the eye; tip and outerweb of tail feathers, ashy gray. Length, about 8 inches; wing, 4.40 to 4.80; tail, 4.20 to 4.70. The only record of the occurrence of this species within our limitsis that given by Mr. E. W. Nelson, who states: A single specimenof this species was obtained Dec. 16, 1875, by Mr. Chas. Douglas atWaukegan. The bird was found in a sheltered ravine, extending ashort distance into the bluff, bordering the lake shore near the abovenamed place and showed no alarm when approached. Nothingpeculiar was observed concerning its habits, except that its move-ments were very sprightly. (Birds N. E. 111., 1876, p. 94.)

Distr.: Eastern temperate North America, west to the GreatPlains and north to Ontario, Michigan, and Wisconsin; south inwinter to Cuba and in Middle America to Guatemala; breeds fromnorthern Florida and the Gulf states northward. Adult: Top of head, bright tawny cinnamon brown, shading toolive brown on the back and brownish olive on the rump and tail; under parts, white, faintly tinged with bufiE on the breast, andeverywhere except on upperthroat; middle of belly andunder tail coverts marked withlarge blackish spots (the con-spicuous spots on the sides ofthe body being a good distin-guishing character); a distinctwhite eye ring; auricular regionstreaked with white and dusky.Sexes similar.Length, about 7.75; wing, 4.25; tail, 3;
