Theircanteens were empty—theirmouths parched and dry.Ralph saw a tall officer spurhis horse forward, and fire atGeneral Reno. That gallantsoldier reeled in his saddle,and fell, but as he was borneto the rear to die, his eyeswere fixed on the men he hadso gallantly led, with a lastlook of farewell The contest was long.Each side fought to the death. As Ralph turned to speak toa companion he heard a wild shout: Forward! One more such charge, and wellhave the Gap. It was the colonels voice, and as he rose in his saddle andcheered
