er which thengradually was evolved (probably in Wales from the tridam) consistedin its lower part of deep drawers upon turned legs, with a highshallow back. Cupboards were added towards the end of Williamand Marys reign. The blackjack upon the shelf bears an inscription upon itssilver rim, implying that it was at one time the property of thewisest fool in Christendom ; and though not so large as one at timesfinds, its resemblance to the jackboot of olden times is sufficient tosomewhat justify the French ambassador, who is said to have reportedthat the English were so attached to their beer that they drank itout of their boots ! The single flap table of early Jacobean days was now enlargedinto the picturesque circular or oval top gate-leg table. The long domination of oak was drawing to a close; though inWales, Yorkshire, and other country districts it remained perforce thechief wood, its supremacy was now to be disputed by walnut—whichin its turn was to yield precedence to mahogany.
Text Appearing After Image:
BRITISH DECORATIVE FURNITURE-STUART, 1603-88 231 century, was also im-ported into Britishwoodwork decorationand largely employed. The diamond orlozenge was seldomused until the Crom- Wellian period, whilst Jacobean strap-work detail, from house at studland. notching, possibly inspired by the wavy ebony mouldings inventedin Germany, appears in English furniture towards the end of theStuart regime. Semicircular scolloped work which,—though at times seen onGothic work on the under edges of shelving,—wasbut little used until the end of Elizabeths reign, gradually became so popular on account of itssimplicity as to be abused. Now-adays it is usually a sign-manualof cheap imitations of old work. Spiral or twisted turneryappeared in English work fromabout 1635, having travelled fromthe East via Portugal or Holland ;but though gradually its vogue increased, despite the Civil War, itsuse is more typical of the post-Reformation than of the pre-Reformationperiod.
