l one, and caused by the moregradual, and complete, reduction of thesilver. The colour is not so important, inthis case, as the effect of the more gradualreduction. In the case of the red image, there is a certain want of proper render-ing of the tone values of the negative,i.e., the intense light destroys the half-tones, and does not correctly Ieproducethe harmonious gradations. This refers,of course, to prints taken from goodaverage negatives. Slow printing is there-fore essential for biight and strong prints, those which can be satisfactorily toned.Slow printing should, however, not becarried to extremes ; as, if prolonged un-necessarily, delicate half-tones will not bereproduced, and the resulting print willshow more violent contrast than thenegative. This fact should be rememberedwhen the negative is not perfect ; but theprincipal idea must be kept in mind, thatfrom plucky negatives, brightly toned pur-ple prints are most readily obtained, thetone varying according to the negative.

TONING WITH GOLD AND PLATINUM. 24l Careful Working Essential. Many more or less explicit explanationshave been written on the subject of goldand platimun toning, but the tyro will dowell to study this more elementary treat-ment of the subject. A great deal oftime and trouble will be saved if, beforeproceeding to print, an examination ismade of the materials which are to beused. As will be seen later, failuresand difl&culties are very often the resultof bad tools, and of these, surely a badnegative is a tool to be despised and castaside. The theoretical side of the toningaction of gold and platinum must bestudied, and its elementary practice atany rate understood thoroughly. The prac-tical is, of course, the main point. Everyeffort will be made in this section to in-clude all necessary formulae, with explana-tory notes, but the toning methods are sovarious that the novice is advised to takeup one well-tried brand of paper, withone particular toning bath, and studythem well.
