FRENCH COACH HORSE SUPERBE. Color, bay; foaled 1881; got by the Government stallion Thuri-feraire 10306; dam Opheline by Jambes d1 Argent; 2d dam byValide. Bred by M. Pacaud, of St. Gervais, La Vendee, France.Imported in 1885, and owned by M. W. Dunham, Wayne, 111. En-graved from a sketch made by Palmer a few weeks after the horsewas imported. Superbe was winner of a first prize and gold medalat the Universal Exposition at Antwerp, Belgium, 1885. 03o)

CHAPTER V. ENGLISH SHIRE OR CART HORSES. No point in equine history is better established than is the factthat to the regions bordering on the western coast of Europe, onceknown as Normandy and Flanders, the world is indebted for thebasis of its various breeds of draft horses. Flanders especially wasfamed, away back in the middle ages, for its famous breed of Blackhorses; and this race appears to have been the prevailing one through-out the north of ancient Gaul and of Germany, from the mouth ofthe Rhine eastward, and Prof. Low thinks inhabited in the wildstate the vast region of marsh and forest which stretched all throughEurope eastward to the Euxine sea. It was from this source thatthe rulers of Great Britain drew in large numbers for the purposeof increasing the size of the horses of the Island. How or whenthis breed originated is a subject upon which history throws no light;but as early as the eleventh century they were largely imported intoEngland, and royal edicts and regulatio
