DescriptionThe cauld by the Philiphaugh Salmon Viewing Centre - geograph.org.uk - 618657.jpg |
English: The cauld by the Philiphaugh Salmon Viewing Centre Overnight rain has swollen the Ettrick Water, a tributary of the River Tweed, and improved conditions for salmon to progress upstream to breeding grounds. The cauld, a large weir built in the 1850s to channel water to Selkirk's mills, blocks the way for the salmon and they can only get upstream by using the fish ladder, a special channel in the middle of the cauld. The Tweed Foundation installed a fish counter here in 1998 and approximately 3000 fish have passed through the ladder for the month of October. The Atlantic salmon will jump the ladder here in May and June and again from mid September to the end of November. Plenty of fish were jumping when I was here and they can also be watched on a big screen at the Philiphaugh Salmon Viewing Centre in the old threshing barn at nearby Old Mill Farm.
