Summary edit
DescriptionThe cauld on the Ettrick Water - geograph.org.uk - 618719.jpg |
English: The cauld on the Ettrick Water The cauld is a large weir that was built in the 1850s to supply water along the mill lade to drive the waterwheel. This powered the Philiphaugh Sawmill and threshing barn and also fed a textile mill downriver on the edge of Selkirk. The cauld is one of the few remaining on the Tweed water system and salmon returning upstream to breed have to negotiate the cauld by using the fish ladder. The Tweed Foundation installed a fish counter in 1998 and approximately 3000 salmon have passed through the ladder for the month of October. The Ettrick is unusual for the River Tweed in having both a spring and autumn run of salmon. (Source: Philiphaugh Estate leaflet).
