Summary edit

Description
English: The church of St Nicholas. View from the SW. Perhaps the most famous person associated with Dereham is St Withburga > 712028, who according to legend fled to Dereham after the death of her father King Anna at the battle of Blythburgh and was buried here. Her remains were supposedly removed by the monks of Ely to be reburied there. A sunken spring in the churchyard is known as St Withburga's well. St Nicholas church at first sight appears to have two towers, one of which is a detached 16th century bell tower (at right). The other tower is the central tower of the cruciform church itself. A medieval rood screen depicting six saints on its panels has survived. The church houses one of only 40-odd existing seven sacrament fonts, installed in 1468, with eight saints carved on its stem > 712030 - 712031.
