Genealogy

Inscriptions transcribed by Francis Blomefield, An Essay Towards A Topographical History of the County of Norfolk: Volume 11 (London, 1810) [2]

  • Matthew Long I (d.1658), who married a certain Mary (d.1668). Their ledger stones in Dunston Church are inscribed: Matthew Long Gent. died Nov. 12, 1658 and Here lyeth interred the Body of Mary Long Widow, and Relict of Matthew Long, Gent. who departed this Life the 19 Day of May 1668;
    • Israel Long I (d.1709) of Dunston, son (?), who married Sarah Long (d.1720), daughter and heiress of a certain Matthew Long, whose ledger stone is beneath the altar, and is inscribed:
There needs no Monument of Brass or Stone,
For one, whose Name is Monument alone.
Here lies a Noble Pair, who were in Name,
In Heart, and Mind, and Sentiments the same,
The Arithmætick Rule then can't be true,
For One and One, did never here make Two.
The ledger stone of their daughter Mary Long (1663-1718) is inscribed: "Mary daughter of Israel Long died 1718 aged 55" and that of their son Robert Long (d.1668) is inscribed: "Robert son of Israel Long Gen. and Sarah his Wife died Dec. 8, 1668"
      • Matthew Long II (1663-1724), son, who married Susanna Potts, a daughter (and heiress) of Sir Roger Potts, 3rd Baronet (c.1641–1711), of Mannington in Norfolk. His monument in Dunston Church is inscribed in Latin:

Obijt Aug. 28, Anno æt. suæ 61, Salutis humanæ 1724.
        • Israel Long II (1702-1759), only son, who married Elizabeth Corrance (1730-1757), who died aged 27, daughter and heiress of Clemence Corrance of Rougham in Suffolk.

General notes

The population of Dunston was almost wiped out by the Black Death in 1348/9 and it is believed that the church became ruinous at that time. St Remiguis' church > 1351405 is located in Commonclose Plantation, on the edge of the golf course which adjoins Dunston Hall Hotel (formerly Dunston Hall), and can be reached via a wooded track > 1351390 which turns off Stow Lane. The building was restored in Victorian times > 1351439 - 1351489 but retains a C15 rood screen, the lower panels of which are lost but the upper tracery with carved figures in the corners is original > 1351441 - 1351449. Some of the windows contain medieval stained glass > 1351466 - 1351473 - 1351480. There is a 17th century brass. The chancel pews are of Tudor origin, as is the font, > 1351499. The pews in the nave are Victorian. The Alabaster decoration inside the east window > 1351458 is recent, the German organ > 1351454 was given to the church in 1921. For more information see: http://www.norfolkchurches.co.uk/dunston/dunston.htm. More than 20 yew trees are growing in the churchyard and over fifty species of wild flowers have been recorded to grow here. A public footpath traverses the churchyard and the church is often open - a key is available from nearby in case the door is locked.
