On the most beautiful moonlight nightof all the year, people say, Charlemagneleaves his tomb in the great cathedral andcomes to this quiet valley of the Rhine.He comes not to do harm, nor simply torest and enjoy the place. His purpose isto bless the spot which was such a blessingto him during his life. On the nights when Charlemagnesspirit visits the place, the silvery moon-beams may be seen to make a fairy bridgeacross the river. The Silver Bridge 91 monarchs spirit passes across the Rhine. He ghdes back and forth, bestowing hisblessing on everything in the neighbor-hood. Every Httle village, every cottage,every hill and valley, the vineyards, theshore, and the great peaceful river itself—all receive his blessing. Last of all he visits the palace which hebuilt here and called Ingelheim, or AngelsHome. From here he returns to his restagain. The people in this little valley are saidto be more prosperous than those of anyother locality along the Rhine. They arealso more happy and more healthy.Their vineyards are always richly ladenwith beautiful clusters of grapes. If at any time their vineyards do notbear, the people know that for some mys-terious reason the spirit of Charlemagnefailed to pay the yearly visit.
