ch the parts of the lung affectedbear no relation to the bronchi—where there are found simply smalleror larger areas of pneumonia irregularly scattered through the lung, usually near the surface (Plate VIII). From the distribution of thelesions such cases might better be termed lobular than bronchopneu-monia. Much has been said in the past about pulmonary collapse from ob-struction of the small bronchi, as a condition antecedent to this form ofpulmonary inflammation. So far as our observations go, there hasbeen adduced but little evidence that this is the rule, or, indeed, that itoften occurs. Even in autopsies made very early in the disease, but littlecollapse is found, most of the cases supporting the view of Delafield, thatwhen the disease extends from the bronchi to the air cells it involvesthose surrounding the tube quite as regularly as those to which the tubeleads. 1 It is probable that a number of cases complicating influenza were includedamong these primary cases* PLATE VIII

ACUTE BRONCHOPNEUMONIA 499 The following observations are made from a study of 170 autopsies ofwhich we have records, microscopical examinations having been made inabout one-third of the number.
