sky which cuts upon thesteep and rocky landscape, the flat variety of red, whiteand blue on walls and cupola are all reminiscent of thepractice of the miniaturists. Again the roseate shadesand changing hues, the transitions of yellow into violet;the pale unmodulated breadth of flesh light abruptlystriped near the outline with a narrow^ ribbon of pallidshadow betray the habits of the carver tinter andilluminator. We may admire the pretty composition ofthe group in the Presentation, the affectionate action ofthe Virgin in the Flight into Egypt; we may detect inthe fall and flow of drapery a simplicity which soon ceasedtocharacterize the Flemings; it may be conceded thatfemale forms and faces are given with a certain amountof feehng and grace; but there is a painful contrastbetween the common or ungainly shape of males andthe comeliness of females; and there is gross incorrect-ness of drawing in hands and feet, and the wooden nude ^^^pa:;^;^^ &i:^iM^ -:gf:#^iMN^:^^r-^-^. ^fi^•■^^
