Esquimaux Dog.—Of recent years the Esquimaux doghas become familiar, as a breed, to many people, owingto the frequent references that have been made to himby the chiefs of exploring expeditions in Northern latitudes.His appearance, moreover, is pretty well known to visitorsto dog shows, as numerous good specimens of the racehave been imported into this country from time to time.It can scarcely be claimed for the Esquimaux dog,however, that his intelligence is great or his sociabilityconspicuous, and he may therefore be regarded morein the light of a curiosity here, and a very useful animalfor draught purposes in his own country, than as acompanionable animal. EVOLUTION resembles that of the animal referred to. The dog is,however, the larger animal, and much more powerfullybuilt, and he stands on longer legs. His body is compactand powerful, and his tail is carried in a curl over hisback. As may be supposed in the case of an animal thatis used for draught, his fore-legs must be straight and stout,with compact feet and thickly-padded soles; whilst thehind-legs are muscular and well let down at the hocks.The outer coat is of fair length and very thick, the underone of the close, sealskin-like character which is carriedby all dogs that are indigenous to cold climates. Thecolour of the Esquimaux is a sort of yellowish grey, andthe average weight about 35 lbs.
