DescriptionThe final resting place of A.D.C. La Gruta - geograph.org.uk - 1208059.jpg |
English: The final resting place of A.D.C. La Gruta This World War 2 gravestone marks the site where 23 years old Flight Sergeant A.D.C La Gruta of the Royal Australian Air Force crashed in his Boulton Paul Defiant after taking off from East Fortune airfield on 19/08/41. Pieces of the wreckage are still lying around near the grave at this lonely spot on Hunt Law at the head of the Earnscleuch Water in the Lammermuir Hills. This is only one of two sites where airmen were buried on high ground in Britain, the other being near Ben More Assynt where the six man crew on an Anson aircraft are buried. In 1991, fifty years after the crash, Flight Sergeant La Grutas nephew flew over from Melbourne, Australia to be at his uncles grave and gave an address in front of a group assembled at the memorial. On my first visit in 1994 there was a poppy wreath at the grave and I believe an annual service used to be held here, although I am unsure if this is still done. The Australian flag was on the ground nearby so I propped it up against the concrete plinth for the photo. The inscription on the gravestone reads:-
TO THE MEMORY OF AUS. 400719 FLIGHT SERGEANT A.D.C. LA GRUTA ROYAL AUSTRALIAN AIR FORCE WHO RESTS HERE WHERE HE DIED ON ACTIVE SERVICE 29th AUGUST 1941 AGED 23 YEARS |
