Amongst the civil customs and habits of the English,in times remote, those relating to public amusements,perhaps, have been the most circumstantially recorded by our ancient chroniclers. * This wood-cut is a facsimile of a portrait of a Court-Fool, selected from a group of those prankish wights, sketchedby the masterly hand of Albert Durer. Aptly enough have those who lived in ages past been designated our sport-and-pastime-lovino- fore-fathers, for with all their industry, and all their thrift,yet did they so order the affairs of life, that they were liberal in their hospitality, and apportioned a part of their time to holiday recreations.
