DescriptionThe headmaster's house - geograph.org.uk - 1538268.jpg |
English: The headmaster's house. Next to the rectory opposite the church is the old village school and headmaster's house, with a coat of arms belonging to Thomas Harley (1613-73), Osgathorpe's greatest benefactor. Born in the village, Harley moved to London during the time of Oliver Cromwell and the Civil War, where he became a successful businessman and had the good fortune to marry three rich widows! The money that he made enabled him to move back to Osgathorpe to escape the turbulent life in London and enjoy a life of wealth. When he died, he left a trust fund for needy widows of the clergy. Money from the trust built the alms houses in 1675 opposite the church (see left of 1298637), the school and the headmaster's house. Even today, the trust is still able to give educational grants for pupils in the Osgathorpe, Thringstone and Whitwick area.
