the giant spoke out witha voice as loud as thunder : Art thou the villain whodestroyed my two kinsmen ? Then will I tear thee withmy teeth and grind thy bones to powder. You willcatch me first, quoth Jack ; and with that let the giantsee him clearly, and then ran from him as if afraid. Thegiant, with foaming mouth and glaring eyes, followed himlike a walking castle, and made the earth to shake atevery step. Jack led him a dance three or four timesround the moat, that the ladies and gentlemen might takea full view of this huge monster, who followed Jack withall his might, but could not overtake him by reason ofhis shoes of swiftness. At length, Jack, to finish thework, went over the bridge, the giant at full speed pur-suing him with his iron club on his shoulder ; but whenthe monster had come to the middle, the weight of hisbody, and the dreadful steps he took, broke it where ithad been cut, and he tumbled into the water, where herolled and wallowed like a whale.
