n alternate order withlozenges of white and yellow, and the letter //ona yellow lozenge. Over the tunic is a long purplecoloured mantle, now greatly faded, lined withwhite fur, and fastened on the right shoulder bya square fibula, jewelled: the border is neatlyembroidered with small crosses, circles, &c. inwhite, red, and green. The tops of his gloves arealso embroidered, and on the back of each,on a dark oval ground, is an ornamental lozengeincluding a quatrefoil: on each little finger is aring, having a jagged edge. His right hand isheld pointing across the body: in his left, whichis extended downwards, he sustains a sceptre ter-minating in a husk,or flower, of gold; the stalk, ap-parently, was meant to represent ivory. The heightof this painting, when entire, must have been aboutseven feet seven inches; but several inches of thelower part have been designedly effaced : the nosehas also been disfigured, and many small portionsof the colouring scraped off in different places. In the covering stone of the tomb on thisside, are various rivets, to which, probably, somebrass figure or inscription was originally attached;but not any thing of that kind now remains. The Canopy is vaulted in four principal divi-sions, which correspond with the pannels at theback, and are subdivided into various lesser com-partments by diagonal ribs, &c. which have beenpainted of an azure colour, and partly gilt, but arenow become black from the effects of time. Thesoffites and spandrils are composed of thin wain-scot, bent to the requisite curves; and the wholeis ornamented with trailing branches of foliage,neatly painted of a white colour, in oil, on a redground. The front of the Canopy consists of four lowpointed arches, having trefoil-headed radiationsunder
