dsome Canopy, nearly resembling Abbot Fas-cets, but more elaborately groined; every part ofwhich has been destroyed; except two shields,surmounted by helmets and crests, (sculptured infull relief,) that ornamented the centres of itsrespective sides : one of these is now placed uponthe stone coffin on Fascets tomb; the other isaffixed over the west end of Ruthalls tomb, andhas the following sentence below the arms:Dat %no Dni 1524. Arms: sculp. On the Tomb, south side; on shields instarred quatrefoils : 1. The first bearing was intended for theSee of Durham, viz. a Cross betw. four Lions ramp, but thesculptor from error, has made the Lions combattant; 2. a CrossPatee betw. four Birds, in Chief two Roses slipped, Ruthall;3. See of Durham, Imp. Ruthall; 4. an Helmet surm. by aMitre, with a wide-spreading Plume, rising from a Ducal Co-ronet; 5. See of Durham. At the head of the tomb: See ofDurham, Imp. Ruthall. Crest: on an Helmet plumed (withmantling) a Mitre rising from a Ducal Coronet.

ST. JOHN BAPTISTS CHAPEL. 185 The Monument of George Fascet, Abbotof Westminster, though of an earlier date andsimilar stone to that of Bishop Ruthall, is in muchbetter preservation. It consists of an altar tomb,surmounted by a low-arched, open canopy, whichhas had an embattled cornice on each side, but thenorthernmost has been destroyed. Several ex-panded leaves in high relief are sculptured on thefrieze, together with a cipher of G. F. and in thespandrils, on shields amidst foliage of differentspecies, are the arms of Fascet and of the Abbey.The same bearings, with others, appear on thetomb in pannellings of starred quatrefoils; and,on the southern ledge, are remains of the followingInscription, painted: but the words in Italics (heresupplied from Camden) cannot now be read.
