Inscription : Erected by the King and Parliament, as a Testimony to the Virtues and Ability of William Pitt, Earl of Chatham,during whose Administration, in the Reigns of George II. andGeorge III. Divine Providence exalted Great Britain to anheight of Prosperity unknown to any former Age. Born Nov.15, 1708. Died May 11, 1778. The middle intercolumniation on the westside, is occupied by another lofty Monument,which was executed by Nollekens, in 1/93, to thememory of the naval Captains, Bayne, Blair,and Manxeus, who were killed in the West In-dies during the two engagements with the FrenchAdmiral De Grasse, in April, 1/82; and whoseremains, in compliance with their own injunctions,were committed to the deep. The figures are allof white marble ; the pyramidical back-ground ofa lightish dove colour, variegated. The central part is occupied bya rostral column, on the summit of which is a well-proportioned statue of Fame, in a standing po-sition, holding a laurel wreath : from the capitaland shaft of the column, and partly sustained by awinged boy, are displayed pendant Medallions, inovals, of the deceased, thus inscribed :— LordRobert Manners, aged twenty-four.— CaptainWilliam Bayne, aged fifty.— Captain JVilliamBlair, aged forty-one. On the basement is a ma-jestic figure of Neptune reclining on a sea-horse,and directing the attention of Britannia, who isstanding on the right of the column, to the me-dallions of her fallen sons: a Lion couchant atthe side of Britannia, and sustaining her shield,completes the group.
