Commerce has frequently, in the history of nations, evinced the rapidity of itsgrowth, as in the case of Venice, Holland, and Great Britain ; but in no instance hasits progress been more remarkable than in that of the United States. It will not benecessary to insert any details respecting the state of commerce while the Americanswere under the colonial yoke, since, under the commercial laws then existinf, theenergies of the colonies were as much as possible repressed, except in subseiviencyto the interests of the mother-country. During the war of the revolution, the degreeof traffic which had previously existed was, of course, suspended; and after the peaceof 1785, commerce still laboured under peculiar difficulties.
