The Sea-lilies, or Crinoida, differleast from them, but having given up the free, slow motionpossessed by other Sea-stars, they have become adherent torocks, etc., and form for themselves a long stalk. SomeEncrinites, however (for example, the Comatulse, Fig. B,on Plates VIII. and IX.), afterwards detach themselves fromtheir stalk. The original worm individuals in the Crinoidaare indeed no longer preserved in the same independentcondition as in the case of the common star-fish ; but theynevertheless always possess articulated arms extending froma common central disc. Hence we may unite the Sea-liliesand Sea-stars into a main-class, or branch, characterized aspossessing articulated arms (Oolobrachia). In the other two classes of Echinoderma, the Sea-urchins and Sea-cucumbers, the articulated arms are nolonger present as independent parts, but, by the increasedcentralization of the stock, have completely fused so as toform a com^mon, inflated, centr
