St. Auguftin mentions this templeand tells us, that the ibre-part of it was dedicate^to virtue, and the back-part to honour, in order teftablifh a refined morality, to which Vitruviuadds a circumftance, omitted by that Saint, thamakes for the fame effed:: viz. that this temple hano pofiicum^ or back-door, as moft others hadwhich intimates, that it is not only necefTary to palthrough virtue to arrive at honour, but that hononobliges her votaries to return alfo through virtuethat is to fay, to perfevere and improve in ic. Ithe plan there is a back-door defigned, conformableto what Vitruvius lays down as ellential to this kiniof temples.
