AN EXCITED INTERVIEW TOOK PLACE. A COUNTRY COMEDY. 239 Ive been up this long while, replied a faint womansvoice trembling Avith cold; but theres no finding thosematches! I dont wonder! 1 was so flurried I threw them in thewash-bowl, replied the peasant. Strike a light in thekitchen, and hurry up. The peasant disappeared with his candle in the narrowpassage-way which passed through the entire depth of thehouse; in the dusk a figure flitted past Paul; he heard arustling sound beside him, and then a ray of faint bluishlight streamed through a half-open door. So that was thekitchen ! If the woman came out now the light would firstfall into that nook between the wall and the door whichharboured him—discovery was inevitable. He could not staywhere he was—but whither should he turn ? The approach-ing steps of the farmers wife startled him.
