Instead of saying a singleword he listened eagerly to Joles prattle, who had seizedhis hand and was now telling him her true story—viz., whoshe was and where she lived, and how it was her mostardent wish to make him abandon his eccentric mode oflife and ask her father for her hand, and become a goodand God-fearing husband. She said many other marvellousthings in well-set words about a happy and virtuous love,adding with a sigh that she well knew how vain was herlonging, and how she hoped he would convince her of thefolly of it all as soon as he had refreshed himself at hertable. Thereupon Jole mingled some wine in a bowl for thesilent monk, and lovingly fed him w4th sweets, so that hismind wandered back to his childhood to the time when hismother tenderly cared for the little lad.
