ophimus, an Ephesian by birth, and aGentile by religion, was converted by Paulto the Christian faith, and accompanied hismaster in his travels. Upon his accountthe Jews raised a great disturbance in thetemple at Jerusalem, the last time Paul wasin that city. They even attempted to mur-der the apostle, for having introduced him,being a Greek, into the temple. Lysias,the captain of the guard, however, inter-posed, and rescued Paul by force from theirhands. On quitting Jerusalem, Trophimusattended his master first to Rome, and thento Spain ; passing through Gaul, the apos-tle made him bishop of that province, andleft him in the city of Aries. About atwelvemonth after, he paid a visit to Paulin Asia, and went with him, for the lasttime, to Rome, where he was witness tohis martyrdom, which was but the forerun-ner of his own ; for, being soon after seizedon account of his faith, he was beheadedby order of Nero. Theecclesiastical writings make very little othermention of him ; but Papias informs us,that he was once compelled to drink poison,which did not do him the least injury,agreeably to the promise of the Lord, tothose who believe in him. He was, duringhis life, a zealous preacher of the gospel;and having received many insults from the Jews, at length obtained martyrdom, beingmurdered by the pagans in Judea. Ananias, bishop of Damascus, is cele-brated in the sacred writings for being theperson who cured Paul of the blindnesswith which he was struck by the amazingbrightness which happened at his conver-sion.
