rce of Kirkcaldy was a central com-merce for places along the lower part of its northside. The town of Kincardine has been very irregularlybuilt. Most of the houses are of one story, andcovered with tile; but the newer ones are of two orthree stories, and covered with slate. The parishchurch of Tulliallan is in the town, and is an ele-gant modern building; here also are a Free churchand an United Presbyterian church; here too, andin the neighbourhood, are some good villas; and thetown, as a whole, exhibits unmistakable marks ofpast importance and present well-doing; yet isthe aggregate appearance of the place not atall prepossessing. The vessels belonging to itcomprise about 9,000 tons, and are worth about£108,000. There are about 50 shipowners; butthey mainly buy or build their vessels elsewhere,and employ them in the trade of the Mediterranean,the West Indies, South America, the East Indies,and Australia. Ship-building was once importanthere, so many as nine vessels being sometimes

Extensive distilleries, salt-works,and collieries, which formerly gave large employ-ment to the inhabitants, arc extinct. lint there arestill a sail-cloth factory, and a rope-work; and afew persons arc employed in the weaving of plainlinen cloths and damasks. The quay or pier is good;and the roadstead adjacent to it is capable of accom-modating 100 large vessels. Kincardine has astation on the Stirling and Dunfermline railway,and is a regular place of call for the Stirling andGranton steamers. It has two good inns, three in-surance agencies, and branch-offices of the Unionhank and the Commercial bank. It is a burgh-of-barony, and is governed by a bailie. Sheriff smalldebt courts are held on the first Monday of February,May. August, and November.
